Microbes are useful to human beings as they help in fermentation process, provide important enzymes, various acids, etc. and some microbes are also causative agents of various human diseases (Bacterial Diseases). Below is the list of micro-organisms and important products given by them.

MICROORGANISM IMPORTANCE
Lactobacillus (Lactic acid Bacteria (LAB)) Production of curd from milk
Baker’s yeast
(Saccharomyces cerevisiae)
Used in Bread making process (Ferment bread dough)
Propionibacterium sharmanii Make holes in Swiss cheese
Penicillium roqueforti Ripening of Roquefort cheese
Brewer’s yeast (Saccharomyces cerevisiae) Ferment malted cereals and fruit juices to
produce ethanol.
Aspergillus niger Commercial production of Citric acid
Acetobacter aceti Commercial production of Acetic acid
Clostridium butylicum Commercial production of Butyric acid
Lactobacillus delbrueckii Commercial production of Lactic acid.
Rhizopus nigricans Commercial production of Fumaric acid
Aspergillus niger Commercial production of Gluconic acid
Yeast (Saccharomyces cerevisiae) Commercial production of ethanol
Streptococcus Streptokinase enzyme used as ‘clot buster’ to remove clots from blood vessels
Trichoderma polysporum Cyclosporin A (Used as immunosuppressive agent in organ-transplant patients)
Monascus purpureus (Yeast) Produce Statins (drug) which is used as blood-cholesterol lowering agents.
Lipase enzyme (from microbes) Used in detergents and helpful to remove oil stains from laundry
Pectinases and Protease (from microbes) Clarification of Bottled juices
Butyric acid bacteria Retting of jute
